About This Series
I put tremendous pressure on myself to be defined—to acquire an official title and to earn a stamp of approval from pretty much everyone in existence. The photos in this series demonstrate my efforts to “wear” and act out certain roles I’ve considered playing in the past, present, and future. There is a silliness to each one, but not in an irreverent way. More so in me being uncomfortable having to squeeze into a skin that doesn’t quite fit. It’s like wearing my sister’s pants. She’s tiny so it’s going to hurt me to breathe while they are buttoned.
Despite the discomfort, I am enjoying myself. I feel and look absurd, but I don’t fucking care. These images serve as a reminder for me to relax, have fun, try something new regardless of fit—with the potential of failing at doing so—and move on.
